Relation between Heavy Metal on Smoking and Blood Pressure and Lipid Metabolism

dc:descriptionOBJECT: Smoking has been known a major risk factor for the development and progression of cardiovascular disease and it contains slight amount of various kinds of heavy metals. There have been some reports that heavy metals can cause cardiovascular diseases and hair mineral analysis is a useful tool for analysis of heavy metals. We evaluated the content of heavy metal in hair of smokers and non-smokers and its influence to blood pressure and lipid metabolism. METHODS: We examined mineral concentration of hair in 236 healthy people who had visited health promotion center in a university hospital from January 2004 to January 2007. Self-reported cigarette smoking status and baseline health questionnaire were obtained. Heavy metal concentration(Hg, Pb, Cd, Al) and differences of blood pressure and serum lipid according to the heavy metal level were evaluated. RESULTS: The mean systolic blood pressure in current smoker group was 121.4±16.3mmHg, and mean diastolic pressure was 79.5±11.5mmHg. In ex-smoker group, mean systolic pressure was 125.6±13.8mmHg, and mean diastolic pressure was 81.3±10.2mmHg. In nonsmoker group, mean systolic pressure was 117.2±15.9mmHg, and diastolic pressure was 75.1±11.3mmHg. The differences of heavy metal concentration was confirmed in mercury according to smoking status groups(current smoker, ex-smoker, and nonsmoker), and it showed positive correlation with systolic and diastolic blood pressure as the packyear of smoking increases. The mean blood pressure and triglyceride of high mercury concentration group was higher than that of normal mercury concentration group and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol was lower in high mercury concentration group. CONCLUSION: The mercury inhaled through cigarette smoking remained in human body and became a risk factor for high blood pressure and the higher mean mercury content the higher the risk of high blood pressure and abnormal lipid metabolism. Therefore, it is necessary to evaluate the mercury concentration on cigarette and daily foods.
