A Retrospective Study On The Change Of Pharyngea Airway Space And Hyoid Bone Position After Mandibular Setback Surgery

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the change of pharyngeal airway space and hyoid bone position after mandibular set back surgery with BSSRO and also to analyse the correlation of the amount of mandibular set back and the amount of change of pharyngeal airway space or hyoid bone position. Lateral cephalograms of 30 patients who underwent BSSRO were assessed preoperatively(T1), immediately postoperatively(T2), and 6 months postoperatively. Pharyngeal airway space and hyoid bone position were evaluated and compared. A significant posterior and inferior displacement of hyoid bone was found 6months after surgery. A considerable decrease in the oropharyngeal airway space was also found. But there was no correlation between the amount of mandibular set back and the amount of change of pharyngeal airway space or hyoid bone position. Mandibular setback surgery can cause a displacement of hyoid bone posteriorly and inferiorly and also decrease a pharyngeal airway space, particularly in oropharyngeal space. In patients who have a predisposing factors of obstructive sleep apnea, caution was needed to planal argeamount of mandibular set back.
