Design of a low-temperature scanning tunneling microscope system used to examine graphene nanomembranes

Abstract

dc:description

This thesis describes the design and assembly of a low-temperature UHV-system including a scanning tunneling microscope. It operates at a temperature of 5 K and at a base pressure of 10^-8 Pa. Using this microscope, I have examined the mechanical behavior of graphene nanomembranes under the influence of tip-induced forces. Two types of behavior were found, which can be explained using a model including electrostatic and van-der-Waals forces.
