Portfolio im Modellstudiengang Medizin der RWTH Aachen : Intention bei Einführung, Statusanalyse und Ermittlung der studentischen Anforderungen zur Implementierung eines elektronischen Portfolios

Abstract

dc:description

For a long time portfolios have been used in university education without considering the students’ voice. An analysis of students’ requirements is actually indicated to integrate the future users in the development of a purposeful, effective portfolio concept. Based on a systematical review of the literature an interview with representatives of the administration of the medical reform curriculum at the University of Aachen was accomplished. Furthermore an online survey amongst 4th semester students (state summer term 2010) of the Medical Faculty of the University of Aachen was conducted. The interview indicates that despite the well underlying concept of the used portfolio, deficits in its realisation are shown. The intention when the paper based portfolio was implemented in winter term 2003/04 was to foster students’ reflection and (self-) evaluation. It was meant to be applied as a learning- and reflective portfolio. Both the administration and students of the medical reform curriculum at the University of Aachen showed a reduction to organisational aspects, such as the presence of the learning content [Kursordnung] or the storage of transcripts in the portfolio. On the students’ side it could be observed that facts concerning the portfolio-idea and its realisation remained unclear, indicating a lack of information in this regard. The requirements analysis represents a community of students which doesn’t make use of the portfolio for the intended purpose despite being open-minded and forward-looking. The particular interest, referring to the electronic portfolio, is with the administration of learning content, followed by the schedule of studies and the option to receive feedback from mentors. To reflect and to set personal aims by means of the portfolio is less important for the students. They adopt a neutral position concerning the possibility to demonstrate and present themselves. Bearing in mind these requirements and beyond that the identified aims of the portfolio-use in the medical reform curriculum at the University of Aachen, various implementation models of a future e-portfolio arise. The realisation could be enabled by aid of an official e-portfolio-tool (as Mahara or PebblePad) or a new software solution. Established electronic supply at University (as CampusOffice, L²P, Webmail, Online MSG Campus-System) could be linked to an official tool or should be integrated in the new solution. With regard to the new system a close collaboration with the department of information technologies is crucial for the implementation as well as for instruction and support.
