Primärprävention und Gesundheitsförderung bei Kindern und Jugendlichen im Setting Schule : eine Befragung an weiterführenden Schulen der Städteregion Aachen zur Bestandserfassung und Bedarfsermittlung
Abstract
dc:descriptionThis dissertation deals with the topic of primary prevention and health promotion among secondary schools in the area called “Städteregion Aachen”. The paper will analyse which projects concerning the health topics “Balanced diet”, “Physical activity”, “Prevention of drug addiction” and “Coping with stress” are already employed at schools and which should be initiated. After pointing out the relevance of health prevention and promotion for our society, the roles of the government, health insurances, the schools themselves and the medical fraternity will be explained. During our research an enquiry was made among secondary schools in “Städteregion Aachen” in order to answer the question, which of the four topics named earlier has already been established in the local schools and how. It also shows who takes part in choosing and realizing according projects and how much teachers know about prevention and health promotion. Do some topics receive more attention and are thus sufficiently covered whereas others need urgent improvement? What are the reasons for previous interventions failing, where are barriers in establishing new ones? 9 of 60 schools took part in our enquiry (15%): 2 of the schoolform “Gymnasium”, 3 of the form “Realschule” and 4 of the kind “Hauptschule”. These schoolforms are all secondary schools but there is no direct equivalent in different school systems. The enquiry showed that the 4 topics do not receive the same attention and that “Prevention of drug addiction” receives the most attention at schools: more than 30% of all interventions deal with drug abuse. The choice and realization of projects is mainly the teachers’ responsibility. Parents or external consultants are barely represented. Still the teachers are not sufficiently informed about primary prevention and health promotion and often feel left alone in having to make their decisions. They do not know where to find a professional contact person or how to get an overview about interventions already offered and the projects quality. This is the main reason why previous projects have failed and new ones are not being established. We also found out that the need for prevention concerns teachers as much as students and that the first topic to focus on has to be “coping with stress”. Teachers have to be informed better and need more help by professional consultants, health offices and health insurances when managing health projects at their schools. When planning the project the individual needs of teachers and students, as well as cultural and gender-specific aspects have to be considered. Furthermore the effect of the projects has to be evaluated in order to review and optimize their effects.
