Usability-Studie der Dekanatssoftware CalRobi für den Modellstudiengang Medizin der RWTH Aachen

Abstract

dc:description

The CalRobi is an application program curricular planning esp. for the generation of syllabi. It was developed according to special requirements induced by the reformed medical curriculum of the Aachen Medical School. The implementation of the reformed curriculum led to the problem that due to the new interdisciplinary structure of the curriculum the available programs for curricular management could not be used anymore by the administrative staff. This problem was addressed by the implementation of the CalRobi software, which is now available to the user as a prototype. CalRobi might not be considered a typical application of clinical information processing. Nonetheless, the evaluation methods used in this study can generally be adopted to various software evaluation tasks in the domain of Medical Informatics. Software usability was assessed by a systematic study consisting of a formative and a summative part. For formative evaluation a heuristic evaluation and a usability test were conducted. For summative evaluation the IsoMetricss-questionnaire was used to compare CalRobi to Microsoft Word®. Overall the formative evaluation detected 110 usability problems in CalRobi. About half were found by the heuristic evaluation and the other half by the usability test. Solutions were defined for the most severe usability problems (severity rating 3 and 4). This was achieved in a group meeting with test users, software developers and a usability expert attendant. The result of the summative evaluation showed that CalRobi performed slightly better with respect to the usability items compared to Microsoft Word® used by the administrative staff for the planning process so far. In order to improve the usability of CalRobi, it was advised to implement the solutions for the usability problems found in the formative evaluation. The heuristic evaluation and the usability test were found to complement each other well. Just 10 of 110 usability problems were detected by both methods. The other 90 problems were discoverd by only one of the two methods. The thesis proposes and discusses the „Discount Usability Test“ as an approach for formative usability evaluation. It can be used were only few financial and personnel resources are available.
