Eine zeitliche Analyse der Unflüssigkeiten im Sprechen von stotternden und nichtstotternden Kindern

The aim of this study was to investigate the frequency and duration of stuttering-like disfluencies (SLD) and normal disfluencies (OD) in the speech of children who stutter (CWS) and children who do not stutter (CWNS). The participants of the study were 26 children who do stutter (CWS), aged 2 to 5 years, and a control group (CWNS). The frequency and duration of stuttering-like disfluencies (SLD) and other disfluencies (OD), including pauses, were analysed from audio- and video-taped speech samples, consisting of at least 1000 syllables. The children included in the CWS-group were considered by both parents to have a stuttering problem, regarded by the examiner as having a stuttering problem, had German as mother tongue, and had no obvious neurological problems or hearing impairment. Since there is a lack of normative data concerning the frequency of SLD in early stuttering for the German language, the well-established criteria in Anglo-American literature of at least three percent SLD per 100 syllables was excluded. Children participating in the control group (CWNS) were matched with the experimental group regarding sex and age. The hypothesis that CWS do have a smaller proportion of OD in their speech than CWNS was not confirmed. The investigation of the second hypothesis – CWS with a longer time since stuttering onset have a smaller proportion of OD in their speech than CWNS – showed a trend in the other direction. This means that this group of children did not confirm the idea that a small proportion of OD can be viewed as one factor that influences the beginning of the disorder or that it is a factor that helps to predict the probability of a remission. Important conclusions of the Covert-Repair-Hypothesis can not be confirmed with the data of this study: the comparison of CWS and CWNS shows very similar frequencies and proportions of OD at the speech time in both groups while the occurrence of SLD differs significantly. This weakens the idea that SLD and OD are different categories of one entity of repair-strategies and that CWS are generally more vulnerable in their speech production and therefore show more and longer OD as the result of slower repair-processes. The most important finding of this study is the empirical confirmation of the hypothesis that older children (CWS as well as CWNS) show a bigger proportion of OD in their speech than younger children do. This data strengthen the concept that OD are used functionally in the speech-planning process, as Starkweather assumes. In this clear differentiation of OD and SLD it is possible to distinguish stuttering children from normally nonfluent children, as it is already done in the Anglo-American speech-language pathology.
