Entwicklung und Bau eines auf Proportionalkammern basierenden Übergangsstrahlungsdetektors für das AMS-02-Weltraumexperiment

The AMS-02 experiment is a large acceptance spectrometer designed to operate in space and measure cosmic-ray fluxes on the International Space Station (ISS) for a data taking period of 3 years. The experiment will allow indirect searches of dark matter candidates with high statistics measurements of positrons from neutralino annihilation. This requires a proton background reduction by a factor 100 - 1000 up to particle energies of 300 GeV from the Transition Radiation Detector (TRD), which is under construction at RWTH Aachen. The design for safe and reliable operation in space consists of 20 layers, each with 20 mm fleece-radiator and modules of 16 straw tubes (diameter: 6 mm) with a total number of 328 modules of lengths up to 2.1 m. The straw modules are filled with a Xe/CO_2 (80%/20%) gas mixture and operated in proportional mode at a gasgain of 3000. The signals are readout by VA chips. The housing consists of a conically shaped octagon structure made out of CFC-Al-honeycomb material and is closed by a lower and upper honeycomb plate. In this thesis special emphasis will be focused on the straw module production and space qualification aspects like structural verification, outgassing and gastightness of the straw modules. The gastightness of the modules is the most critical design issue, because of a limited gas storage on the ISS. It is shown, that the constructed AMS-02 TRD flight straw modules are so far within specification and schedule.
