The goal of this thesis is the determination of a correlation between skid resistance, velocity and stopping sight distance for road design purposes based on actual decelerations. In a first step, tests are performed at which a vehicle travelling with different selected speeds is being brought to a halt on wetted road sections with various skid resistance properties. Through the variation of initial speed, vehicle type, tire tread depth and braking system (with or without ABS) the most important influences on vehicle deceleration can be assessed. From these test results, correlation curves are derived between skid resistance (measured with SCRIM) and „mean fully developed deceleration” (MFDD). In a second step, these results lead to a modelling of the deceleration process on the basis of a point-mass model to determine the correlation between skid resistance, velocity and stopping sight distance. In addition to MITSCHKE's approach, the radial tractive force component is also taken into consideration in this model. Therefore, it is now possible to determine the actual braking distance both for straight lines (based on braking tests) as well as for curves (based on a model calculation) with known skid resistance, speed, curve radius and longitudinal and transverse slope and express the correlation between skid resistance, velocity and stopping sight distance. This relationship enables a practical determination of the stopping sight distance for road design, for which contrary to the German road design standard RAS-L the radial tractive force component is taken into consideration and the assessment of the stopping sight distance is based on actual deceleration results. In addition, the existing road network can be assessed with regards to the interaction between skid resistance, velocity and stopping sight distance. The formulas and graphs of this thesis enable the determination of the maximum safe speed for a certain skid resistance and stopping sight distance. Therefore, speed limits can be justified by actual braking distances. This thesis shows that the traffic safety component determined herein is a significant instrument in the assessment of traffic safety during the design phase as well as for existing roads based on vehicle dynamics.
