Behandlung von PP- und PET-Substraten im Argon- und Methan, Argon-Plasma

Abstract

dc:description

PP and PET are very cheap materials with a growing market. Due to the improvement of surface properties of these polymers microwave induced plasma is an favourably method. In particular reduced damages of the polymer with the low temperature in plasma processes are expected. The aim of the work was to investigate the modification of PP and PET with Ar- and CH4/Ar-plasma to crosslinking and the examination of radical generation in these surfaces. The treatment of PP foils with Ar- as well as with CH4/Ar-plasma leaded to an apparent surface hydrophilicity, which was stable over three weeks. This was considered as indirect proof for crosslinking reactions. Surface composition of the treated PP determined by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) showed a higher O/C-ratio compared to the untreated PP. Samples treated with CH4/Ar-plasma also evinced a clear increase of the O/C-ratio compared to the untreated PP. UV-Vis-spectrometry was used to evaluate the transmission of the PP foil at a wavelength of 190 nm. A great increase of extinction was notified with Ar- as well as with CH4/Ar-plasma treated PP foils. The dependence of the increasing extinction on rising MW-power refers to a growth of OH- and CO2-groups along with C-C-double bonds in the PP surface. The exhaust of the plasma process was containing hydrogen, which was considered as symptom for radical generation. While treating PP foils with Ar-plasma an increase of H2 with rising MW-power due to enlarged radical generation with abstraction of H2 was observed. Compared to Ar-plasma treatment with CH4/Ar-plasma resulted in much more H2 because of additional fracturing of CH4 in the plasma exhaust. With rising process pressure no variation in the extinction of plasma treated PP with both process gases was notified. A decrease of the amount of H2 with rising process pressure was observed in the exhaust as well with a plasma monitor. The increasing amount of radicals formed with reduced pressure lead to UV non active crosslinking. PET foils treated with Ar- and CH4/Ar-plasma showed an apparent surface hydrophilicity. The surface composition showed a lower O/C-ratio compared to the untreated for Ar-plasma treated samples and even much lower for CH4/Ar-plasma treated foils. After treatment with Ar-plasma PET fabrics appeared more wetable even over several weeks. The Ar-plasma treated fabric exhibited with rising MW-power an decrease of the O/C-ratio in the surface elemental composition. Exhaust analytics showed a clear increase of the amount of H2. Compared to the untreated material the wetability of the CH4/Ar-plasma with a MW-power of 240 W treated PET fabric increased and was stable over the whole observed time. With higher MW-power the fabric only got more hydrophilic directly after the treatment. The O/C-ratio of the CH4/Ar-plasma treated fabric was lower than the ratio of the untreated sample and decreased rapidly with rising MW-power. While treating the fabric with CH4/Ar-plasma just a small increase of H2 in the exhaust was detected. Since the formation of a barrier layer on treated samples is expected, this layer should be determined with a reduced predisposition for hydrolysis of the PET fabric in basic suds. Investigations of the PET hydrolysis showed, that only with maximum MW-power it was possible to form a slightly barrier with Ar-plasma. CH4/Ar-plasma treatment on the other hand leaded to a distinct reduction of the PET fabric hydrolysis and thus a potent barrier layer was realised.
