Terminologische Untersuchung des Diagnostischen und Statistischen Manuals psychischer Störungen (DSM-IV) - ein Vergleich des Originals und der deutschen Übersetzung

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) has been developed to increase the reliability of psychiatric diagnosis and generate a valid and worldwide accepted classification system. Both the fourth original edition (1994) and the German translation of DSM IV edited in 1996 define operational and diagnostic psychopathologic criteria. With the demand for reliability and validity there also has been the demand for developing a restricted and unequivocal vocabulary. Therefore the present paper discusses the standardization and consistency of vocabulary of the German translation. In order to analyze these facts an elected chapter was looked at and by utilization of linguistic methods it was shown whether the demand for a standardized psychopathologic vocabulary was fulfilled. Another focal item was the analysis of the compatibility of the DSM-IV terminology and of some well-known and often used symptom check lists, such as Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale, Hamilton Depression Scale, Depression State Inventory and Fisher Symptom Check List. It has been proofed that there is no standardized or restricted terminology within the analyzed chapters. Further the self-defined guidelines for the German translation have not been strictly realized. There is an inconsistency of language. As to the comparison of the terminology of the DSM-IV and the noted symptom check lists it could be shown that both are compatible.
