Expression des Zellzyklus-Inhibitors p27 KIP1 in Leiomyomen und Leiomyosarkomen

dc:descriptionAbnormality of cell cycle regulators and tumor suppressors, such as cyclin dependent kinase inhibitors (cdkIs), has been reported in malignant tumors. The current study was undertaken to examine the involvement of a cdkI p27KIP1 leiomyoma and leiomyosarcoma. Immunohistochemical staining was performed on 41 samples of leiomyoma and 35 samples of leiomyosarcoma and expression of p27KIP1 was evaluated semiquantitatively. The results were very inconsistent in both groups ranging from no p27KIP1 -expression to high overexpression in both leiomyoma and leiomyosarcoma without significant differences between the two groups. However a trend toward higher expression of p27KIP1 in leiomyosarcoma could be observed. This finding is in contrast to results of studies investigating p27KIP1 in various other tumors, where a loss of p27KIP1 could be observed in most carcinomas. However paradoxical expression of p27KIP1 has been found in other tumors too and shows that p27 obviously has other functions than that of a sole tumor suppressor. Cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor p27KIP1 has thus not qualified as a diagnostic marker for the differentiation between leiomyoma and leiomyosarcoma.
