In this dissertation, an innovative heavy water cooled and -moderated Pebble Bed Pressurized Water Reactor (PBPR) with inherent security characteristics will be presented. This concept bares analogies to the High Temperature Reactor (HTR). I will be shown, which contribution can be realized by the application of ceramic materials within this concept. The focus of this dissertation will be on the production and the characteristics of ceramic coated, graphite fuel elements for this reactor concept. As shown the engineering ceramic silicon carbide (SiC) has turned out to be a suitable coating material. The following characteristics make this material most applicable: high temperature stability, high thermal conductivity, excellent corrosion resistance as much as its low cross-section concerning neutron absorption. The spherical fuel elements consisting of reactor graphite were coated with an especially developed technique with silicone-infiltrated silicon carbide (SiSiC) in a high temperature proceeding.
