In this work the deformations and vibrations of circular steel and copper plates subjected to impulsive loadings are studied. The aim is to find appropiate constitutive laws and structural models, which are able to describe the deformations of the used plates. Experimentally the plates are subjected to shock waves in a shock tube. During the deformations plastic strains can occur. In order to model the structural behaviour a shell theory is used assuming small strains and moderate rotations. Furthermore a first order shear deformation theory is included. The material behaviour is modelled with the Bodner-Partom law and with two versions of the Chaboche law. Using a Finite Element program, suitable for the mentioned shell theory and constitutive models, the plate deformations can be simulated and compared to measured deformations. This way the different constitutive models are tested for their applicability. Moreover a modified transverse shear stress distribution is implemented in the Finite Element code to determine the dependence between the simulations and the shear stress distribution. Furthermore the sensitivity of the simulations with respect to variations of the material parameters is studied. Also the accuracy of the calculated deformations in the range of small and moderate rotations is examined. In the case of repeated shock wave loadings on one plate limit states in the middle point displacements can occur. These deformations are described by a simplified mechanical model. Finally the deformation behaviour of plates is studied, which are subjected to impulsive loadings from both sides.
