If vibrations or impacts are introduced near a building, these vibrations or impacts will propagate in the ground in different wave forms. How to minimize the reaction of sensitive buildings and industrial plants due to the vibrations is an important research topic. A possibility to screen sensitive foundations against surface waves is the passive trench. In order to examine the function of the trench the propagation will be simulated in this research numerically with the aid of the boundary element method. The calculation takes place in a three dimensional system, because only so the waves that will pass aside the trench and refraction can be considered. The calculations carried out in this research contain a parameter study at a system with two foundations (exciter, receiver) and a passive trench. In addition a system with several exciter foundations is considered. The essential results : With increasing measurements and/or stiffness of the trench the screening effect will be better. The trench should be placed as close as possibly to the foundation to be protected. An open trench leads to an enlargement of the amplitude of the receiver at the examined system dimensions for frequencies to approximate 200 rad/s opposite the system without trench. With higher frequencies (200 rad/s to 400 rad/s) a screening is to be achieved however also with open trench. The density and the damping of the filling material have practically almost no influence on the screening effect.
