Arbeitsgedächtnis und elektrokortikale Aktivität : eine experimentelle Untersuchung zur Differenzierung von Subsystemen des Arbeitsgedächtnisses

Three different parameters of electrocortical activity were employed to analyse the information processing demands within functionally separable working memory subsystems. Subjects were required to encode, retain and reproduce three different types of of stimulus material: (i) strings of consonants; (ii) dot matrices, and (iii) simulated traversals of a virtual tunnel. Event-related potentials (ERP) and spatio-temporal current density reconstruction (stCDR) were applied to determine the mechanisms responsible for stimulus encoding. The retention of material-specific representations was investigated using frequency analysis of defined spectra. The encoding of consonants and matrices revealed a prominent P2(00) ERP response, the topography of which indicating a frontally initiated process that spread to posterior sites. Encoding the dynamic tunnel displays led to a prominent N2-P3-complex, revealing differences between allo- and egocentric based frames of reference for spatial orientation. Analyses of stCDR supported the assumption that different subsystems of working memory were activated when modality-specific material was encoded. Analysis of spontanious EEG-activity for the retention of material-specific representations showed no clear results. An interpretation of frequencies of defined spectra had to take both, allo- and egocenric frames of reference for spatial orientation into account. The results are discussed with respect to the similarities and differences in information processes within distinct working memory subsystems. Evidence is offered for the assumption of an independent spatial subsystem.
