Untersuchung unterschiedlicher Eigenschaften westafrikanischer Holzarten unter dem Aspekt ihrer Verwendung für Ingenieurtragwerke
Abstract
dc:descriptionWood is a building material which needs no energy for its production and only very few for mechanical treatment. These properties make itinteresting for the economy of developing countries to use domestic species of wood in connection with regu- lated forestry. In many African countries (including Togo) building regulations for timber structures are missing. Foreign standards do not consider the domestic species. This subject was picked up in other to give a scientifically based contribution for future timber standards in Togo. On the basis of systematic literature studies and of specific laboratory tests the most important species Iroko, Mahagoni and Teak were collected, the common used German species Pine (Fichte, picea) was chosen for comparison. The laboratory tests cover two main areas, which are insufficiently studied for African wood species until now: fracture mechanical properties and hygric behaviour, both in connection with the microstructure of the wood species. Hopefully the results of tihs thesis Will effect progress for civil engineering application of domestic wood in Togo and other West African countries.
