Auralisation in building acoustics

Abstract

dc:description

In this thesis, an algorithm for auralisation of airborne and impact sound insulation in buildings was developed, verified, and applied in several areas of research. After a short introduction to prediction methods for sound insulation in European countries, two methods for calculation of sound insulation in a two-room situation are described. These methods use the data of the building products to calculate the total sound insulation. The results form the input data for the auralisation algorithm. After the description of the basic principles of auralisation in general and fundamentals of the algorithms for auralisation of airborne and impact sound insulation, a verification regarding psychoacoustic and subjective parameters is presented. The practical relevance of building acoustical auralisation is proven with two applications of the auralisation of airborne sound insulation. Both applications deal with speech transmitted through sound insulating constructions. First, speech intelligibility was investigated. It plays an important role for acoustic comfort (privacy in dwellings) and confidentiality in office buildings. In a second application, the influence on mental processing was evaluated. Building acoustical auralisation is useful in many fields of applications. It can be used in the design of buildings or in teaching. Students of acoustics, architecture, and civil engineering get an impression of the acoustic effects of different materials and construction methods immediately. In research, it allows the execution of listening tests without having to carry out extensive measurements and recordings. Thus, it is a useful tool to improve the quality of reference curves for single number ratings.
