In the context of water quality modelling of catchment areas there is an increasing interest in flow simulation of small lakes and reservoirs in Germany. The physical processes in small lakes and reservoirs are described on the basis of the classification of turbulent characteristics in the context of the theory of fluid mechanics. Here, the use of Wavelet Transform proves that the statistical analysis of turbulence must be extended to coherent structures. The verification of the LES-method with technical flow models as well as validation on the basis of nature measurements represent the necessary condition for application. The successful verification is documented investigating turbulent channel flow and wind-induced channel flow. The model validation compared with nature measurements in the Dreilägerbach reservoir shows a very good agreement in the characteristic of the current profiles. This underlines the special suitability of the LES method for the specification of flow phenomena in lakes and reservoirs. The analysis of turbulent structures proves the complexity of the flow in lakes and reservoirs. Thereby the relevance of turbulence for the present flow phenomena becomes clear. The characterization of the flow leads to an identification of different flow regimes. These regimes show considerable differences in the turbulence statistics in addition to the mean flow characteristics. The application of the Wavelet Transform in connection with a Large Eddy Simulation model allows for the first time the identification and assessment of turbulent flow characteristics in small lakes and reservoirs. To summarize, this work shows that the numeric model PASTIS-3D applied is very well suited for the investigation of characteristic flow phenomena in small lakes and reservoirs. On this basis it is possible to derive simplified models in the future, which cover the different characteristic flow phenomena and turbulent properties in small lakes and reservoirs.
