The large electricity demand of primary aluminium production causes corresponding mass and energy flows. Depending on used primary energy, energy transformation technique and reachable efficiency different resource demands are caused. Objective of this paper is the model development to balance energy supply structures based on process chain analysis, used the primary aluminium production as an example. Within this analysis the proper electricity supply for aluminium production is processed. The often used hydro power for aluminium production will be analysed focussed on modelling their greenhouse gas emissions like methane and carbon dioxide. In an analysis the technical optimisation potential of primary aluminium production and the used electricity is examined. As an example the theoretical energetic optimisation potential of light packaging production in Germany till 2010 is shown. A long-term scenario till 2040 point out the growth of aluminium demand in Germany and resulting environmental effects. The increased electricity demand of a possible extension of primary aluminium production in Surinam is analysed regarding operating, environmental and economical aspects. All carried out examinations show three ascertain factors of energy related resource demand for primary aluminium production: - the final energy demand of the aluminium production process, especially the aluminium electrolysis, - the used energy carrier und technique of energy supply, - the used quality (efficiency of transformation as well as primary and secondary emission reduction systems) of technology.
