Faktorenstruktur des NPI-R : (revidierte deutsche Fassung des Narcissistic Personality Inventory, Raskin) Eine Studie zur Konstruktvalidität
Abstract
dc:descriptionNarcissistic personality disorder (NPD) is the subject of several theoretical concepts, but there are few validated personality inventories. Factor analysis can demonstrate a statistical context of narcissistic features. A so found structure is possibly independent from a certain concept. The present study is a factor analysis of narcissistic personality disorder represented by the NPI-R. NPI-R is a revised German version of the narcissistic personality inventory by Raskin and Hall, containing 40 items of self-rating, based on DSM (diagnostic and statistical manual of mental diseases). Structure of factors represents its construct validity. Reliability is described by Cronbach's alpha (internal consistence). Differentiation between NPD, Borderline patients and a control group are further tested, as well as the relation of numbers of male and female persons with NPD. 90 in- and outpatients of the psychiatric department of Aachen university (Germany) were examined by the NPI-R, patients with affective and personality disorders, but without an acute psychosis. A control group was represented by 110 persons not being in a psychiatric treatment. Factor analysis of NPI-R resulted in a structure of 3 factors: egocentricity, entitlement and superiority, which can be found in DSM. A structure of 4 or 7 factors described by Raskin, Hall and Emmons using the original NPI was not found. According to the statistics, a fictive number of factors had no influence on the result. Factors like pathological love and sexuality, ethics and cognitive deficits described by Deneke, Kernberg, Akhthar and Thomson, are totally missing. They are not a part of DSM. Alpha values from 0,74 to 0,8 represent a high internal consistence and reliability, so NPI-R can be compared with the original NPI-R. Differentiating persons with NPD from Borderline (p = 0,73) and the control group (p = 0,43) was not significant (at a level of alpha = 5%). More men than women with NPD were found, which is also a result from other studies (70% vs. 30%). With a sufficient validity and reliability, NPI-R is able to determine structure and degree of a narcissistic personality disorder, according to DSM. It is not an instrument to find diagnosis and differential diagnosis.
