Prävalenz und Pathogenese der Bornavirus(BDV)-Infektion

The Borna Disease Virus, an negativ-stranded, enveloped RNA- virus from the family of the Mononevagirales, causes a formerly only in connection with animals descripted infection of the CNS. It was shown that the virus is able to infect human beings and supposed that the infection leads to neuropsychiatric disorders. An evaluated standard for the diagnostic of the infection does not exist yet. In this work seralogical (indirect immunfluorescence assay and Western blot assay) as well as molecular-genetic proof methods (nested RT-PCR) for the BDV diagnostic were developed and three collectives were examined. It was possible to provide evidence that there is a significant higher prevalence of BDV- infections in the psychiatric collective compared to the normal collective (37 % compared to 10 %). The examination of a further psychiatric collective from Mexico served the evaluation of diagnostic methods through a re-test. The files of the psychiatric patients were analysed retrospectively and it was possible to show that classical defined psychiatric diagnoses such as schizophrenia and depression have no significant higher prevalence of BDV - infections but unspecific neuro-psychiatric changes such as disorders of consciousness and in the broadest sense the brain-organic psycho-syndrom (HOPS). This is to be seen as a verification for the thesis that human beings cannot just be infected by BDV, it also causes neuro-psychiatric disorders.
