Johann Heinrich, Hubert Martin Joseph und Franz Vogeno : eine Aachener Goldschmiedefamilie des 19. Jahrhunderts

The study supplies a contribution to the examination of applied arts in historicism. For the first time, a great number of mostly unknown works of the goldsmiths Johann Heinrich, Hubert Martin Joseph und Franz Vogeno, which include sacral silver in particular, are examined systematically. 160 objects produced between 1828 and 1933 and mainly kept in German, Dutch and Belgian churches are stylistically and iconographically analyzed and documented in a catalogue. While from Heinrich Vogeno's atelier chiefly neoclassicistic and neobaroque works emerged, his son Martin Vogeno, who took over the workshop in the middle of the 19th century, produced works in a proper style by falling back on techniques which were highly appreciated at that period. As a result of the present study, one can draw the conclusion that, at his time, Martin Vogeno was one of the most prominent goldsmiths of the Rhineland, while Franz Vogeno was not able to live up to his father's reputation, because the uniformity of his artistic vocabulary couldn't compete with other ateliers at the end of the 19th century.
