Ein Infrarot-Laser-Positions-Kontroll-System für das AMS-Experiment

Abstract

dc:description

The Anti Matter Spectrometer (AMS) is designed for the space based search for cosmic antimatter and dark matter. The AMS detector will be installed on the International Space Station (ISS) in 2003. In June 1998 a precursor version of the final AMS-02 detector was flown on board of the space shuttle Discovery for the 10-day Mission STS-91. During this flight AMS-01 collected more than 10^8 high energetic (p > 0.8 GeV) cosmic ray events. The momentum measurement system of the precursor AMS-01 detector is a 6-plane silicon tracker embedded in a permanent magnet with a magnetic field of B x ldl = 0.14 Tm². The position of the 6 tracker planes is monitored by 4 infrared laser beams (lambda = 1083 nm). The development and the results of this light and space proofed Tracker Alignment System (TAS) are major parts of this thesis. Position measurements with an accuracy of dx < 3 µm are possible. Furthermore the measured positions of the TAS are reproduced by the results of the so called cosmic alignment which also has been developed during this thesis. Combining the results of these two alignment methods the momentum measurement of AMS-01 has been improved by 20%. Last but not least, the readout bonding scheme of the silicon sensors has been optimised with the TAS laser system and a micro focus lens, such that charge measurement has been improved by 30 % without decreasing the accuracy of the position measurement of the sensors.
