The influence of nucleation on nucleus growth during primary static recrystallization is investigated with a statistical model of the textural evolution. The presented time resolved model takes into account several physically based and experimentally confirmed nucleation mechanisms. Nucleus growth is calculated as a function of time. The local growth rates of the nuclei depend on the stored energies and on the grain boundary mobilities. In contrast to other statistical models the growth approach also considers the temporal evolution of the surroundings of the nuclei. The nucleation mechanisms determine misorientation distributions and nucleus densities during early stages of nucleus growth. In later stages of recrystallization the growing recrystallized grains meet a compromise growth environment where the nucleus misorientations are determined by a statistical misorientation distribution. The consideration of a changing growth environment reveals the strong influence of nucleation on growth. The impact is much more severe than just providing nuclei with defined orientations. A crucial aspect which has been neglected in simulations so far, is the influence of the misorientation distribution on the growth of the nuclei. With a narrow misorientation distribution between nuclei and surrounding deformed matrix the distribution of stored energy dominates the textural evolution during growth. The extent of that influence is determined by microstructural parameters. With a wide scatter in the misorientation distribution the mobility function of the grain boundaries predominates the textural evolution. The strength of oriented growth depends on other parameters like the local number of different orientations. Finally, the nucleation mechanisms determine which parameters affect nuclei growth. Thus, it can be concluded that nucleation controls the growth conditions during recrystallization
